ASTHMA: Mix 1 tsp. honey with 1/2 tsp. Watkins cinnamon and take it at night before going to bed.

DRY SKIN: Combine 1 cup oatmeal, 1 cup warm water, 1 Tbsp. Watkins vanilla extract, and 1/2 cup baking soda in a blender or food processor until you have a smooth paste. Pour this paste under the running water while drawing the bath. Very soothing to dry, itchy skin.

MUCUS IN COUGH: Pour 1 cup boiling water over 1/2 tsp. each of Watkins ginger, Watkins ground cloves, and Watkins cinnamon. Filter. Sweeten with 1 tsp. honey and drink.

STOMACH ACHE: A simple cure for a stomachache is to dissolve 1 1/2 tsp. Watkins ground cinnamon in 1 cup warm water, cover and let sit for 15 minutes, then drink it like tea. This remedy can also ease diarrhea and flatulence.

VOMITING AND NAUSEA: Watkins cinnamon and sliced ginger work by interrupting nausea signals sent from the stomach to the brain. If you are an herbal tea drinker, simply sprinkle cinnamon on the tea and drink. To make ginger tea, simmer a few slices of ginger in hot tea water.

Here are some great ideas to help you go green while you clean with peppermint!

Freshen up your microwave by putting about a 1/4 to 1/2 tsp of peppermint extract on a damp cloth and wiping down the inside of you microwave.
Take a clean spray bottle and put in a tsp or 2 of peppermint extra, then fill with water. Then spray where needed as a "air freshener"
When done washing your kitchen cutting boards, give them a few sprays from your spray bottle to help deodorize and clean them.
As peppermint is a natural cleaning agent, use a damp rag with some peppermint extra on it to wipe down the baby's high chair or toys etc.

You are most likely saying "is she out of her mind?" I have always enjoyed doing the dishes. I find it relaxing and calming. I guess it is the water movement and the time I have to think about things as I doing the dishes. I usually take this time to think and reflect on certain things that are happening.

My dish washing experience has gotten even more relaxing and calming for me as I have discovered a little trick to help me enjoy it even more. I now add a few drops of my Watkins All Natural Peppermint Extract.

In the personal care segment many companies are applying "natural" to their product labels. Without a governing agency to set natural standards for personal care, any brand on the market can call itself natural, regardless of its ingredients. Definitely deceiving to consumers!

Without set standards it is easy to see why consumers are confused! With Watkins you can trust our entire line of 95% and above natural personal care products are natural. But just how do you decipher the truly natural products from impostors? Watkins Natural Personal Care Product Manager Andrea Buckner sat down with me to explain and offer a few helpful tips.

What makes a personal care product natural?

The ingredients in a product determines if a product is truly natural or not. At Watkins, we believe that in order to call a product natural, the product as a whole needs to be formulated using natural ingredients. In an ideal world, all of our products would be 100% natural, and that is something we are striving for; however, there are circumstances when a natural substitution is not available. We take into consideration the origin of ingredients, as well as the processes that it may under take to be a useable ingredient in personal care products. Just because a product contains one or two natural ingredients, doesn't mean it's truly a natural product.

What are the clues we should be looking for on the label that tell us the product is not truly natural?

Because the market is not regulated, being label savvy is really important when it comes to natural personal care products. If you see parabens (Methyl-, Propyl-, Ethyl-, Butyl-), petrochemicals (petrolatum, mineral oil, paraffin), chemical sunscreens (Oxybenzone/Avobenzone),or phthalates, you can be sure the product is not natural. Also, be apprehensive when you see a personal care product that says all-natural, made with natural, contains natural. . . .etc. Check the ingredients!

What if a product contains a natural ingredient? Is it natural?

Definitely not! There are companies out there who do this exact thing. Their lotion contains natural lavender oil, so they call it a natural lavender lotion. This is very deceiving to the consumer, but because natural personal care is not regulated, companies get away with stuff like this. This is why we put our natural percentage bar on each product that we have. We are honest with the consumer.

But it says "natural" or "organic" on the label.

Correct, and legally the companies can call it what they want. Recently, however the Natural Products Association (NPA) has stepped forward with a set of guidelines that have defined what 'natural' means. At Watkins, we are in the process of having all of our natural personal care products certified by the NPA, which will allow us to put a seal on each product. This seal ensures the consumer that the products they are purchasing are truly natural. It also helps to separate those who are not natural companies. Since I have been using this for my upset stomach problems I realize how hard the "other stuff" was on my system. It would take me a day or two to recover from the side effects of it. If you're a salt watcher, here's some good news that you shouldn't just take with a grain of salt! A new study reported at a meeting of the American Heart Association found that people who consumed more calcium, magnesium and other minerals tended to have lower blood pressure than those who ate less of these minerals. In this study, when calcium, magnesium and other minerals were readily consumed, salt had much less impact on raising blood pressure than expected. When intake of these minerals was low, salt intake drove blood pressure up. It appears that high intake of certain minerals can help to counteract the effects of salt on blood pressure. Petro Carbo to the RESCUE!

Ever since I was a child I have had bad reactions to bug bites. The other day I had a black fly bite on my inner right wrist. It was just at the place on my wrist that every time I moved my wrist it would irritate the bug bite. Since I am right handed it, it was getting so irritated and sore. What is Green?

"Green" living is a way of life that considers the consequences of ones actions on the environment. It is a way of conducting life in an effort to preserve environmental quality.

It doesn't take much to fit Green living into your life. Sometimes all it takes is a little creative thinking. How about reusing the J.R. Watkins Natural Home Care bottles? Here are some great ways to put them to use.

Use them to mist water on delicate indoor plants (after they have been rinsed clean).

Planter — Make your own planter by cutting off the top 1/3 of the bottle, poke holes in the bottom and enjoy your new planter. This is a great activity for children; they love to watch their plants grow!
